What is a Large & Mid Cap Fund?

A Large & Mid Cap Fund must invest at least 35% in large cap stocks (top 100 companies) AND at least 35% in mid cap stocks (companies ranked 101–250). Total equity must be at least 70%. The remaining 30% is at the fund manager's discretion.

This category, mandated by SEBI's 2017 categorisation circular, gives investors a blend of large-cap stability and mid-cap growth in a single regulated fund.

The Sweet Spot:

Large & mid cap funds sit between pure large cap (lower risk, lower return) and pure mid cap (higher risk, higher return). They are an excellent choice for investors who want meaningful mid cap exposure but are not comfortable with a pure mid cap fund's volatility.

Bottom Line

Large & mid cap funds are the natural entry point for investors ready to move beyond pure large cap but not willing to take on the full volatility of a pure mid cap fund. The 35/35 mandatory split ensures you always get meaningful mid cap growth without full small cap risk. A solid choice as a core equity holding for 5–7 year goals.
