What is a Quant Mutual Fund?
A Quant Mutual Fund (short for quantitative) uses mathematical models, algorithms, and large datasets to make investment decisions rather than relying primarily on human judgment or qualitative research. The fund manager defines the model; the model picks the stocks.
In India, "Quant" is also the name of a popular AMC — Quant Mutual Fund (AMC). This can be confusing. There are two separate things:
- Quant Mutual Fund AMC: A specific AMC (Asset Management Company) that runs a range of funds, many using quantitative approaches
- Quantitative investing as a strategy: A methodology used by multiple AMCs (including Quant AMC and others)
This article covers both: the general concept of quantitative investing in mutual funds, and key things to know about Quant AMC's fund range which has attracted significant investor interest in recent years.

A quant fund's model typically scores stocks across multiple factors:
| Factor | What It Measures | Example Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Value | Is the stock cheap relative to fundamentals? | P/E, P/B, EV/EBITDA |
| Momentum | Is the stock in an uptrend? | 12-month price return |
| Quality | Is the business financially sound? | ROE, Debt/Equity, Cash Flow |
| Low Volatility | Is the stock less volatile than peers? | Standard deviation of returns |
| Growth | Is earnings/revenue growing consistently? | EPS growth rate |
| Liquidity | Can the fund trade this stock easily? | Average daily trading volume |
The model assigns scores and weights across these factors, then ranks all stocks in the investable universe. The top-ranked stocks enter the portfolio; low-ranked stocks are sold. Rebalancing is typically quarterly or monthly.
SEBI Regulation of Quant Funds
SEBI does not have a separate "Quant Fund" category. Quantitative funds are registered under standard SEBI categories — Flexi Cap, Large Cap, Mid Cap, Multi Cap, etc. — depending on their investment universe. SEBI regulations require all AMCs to disclose their investment philosophy and process in the Scheme Information Document (SID), which means quant AMCs must describe their model's key factors and rebalancing approach.
Quant Mutual Fund AMC was subject to a SEBI investigation in 2024 regarding allegations of front-running — a practice where traders use advance knowledge of upcoming fund trades to profit. As of July 2026, this investigation was ongoing and not concluded with any final order. Investors should verify the current regulatory status of any AMC before investing. Source: sebi.gov.in
Risks of Quant Funds
| Risk | Severity | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Model Risk | High | If the model is flawed or overfitted to historical data, it will underperform in live markets |
| Factor Crowding | Moderate | When many funds use similar factors, the "edge" disappears as everyone buys the same stocks |
| Black Swan Events | High | Models trained on historical data may not anticipate unprecedented events (COVID, financial crises) |
| High Turnover | Moderate | Frequent rebalancing increases transaction costs and taxable events |
| Model Opacity | Moderate | Investors often cannot independently verify or understand the model's full logic |
Quant vs Active vs Index
| Approach | Who Decides | Cost | Transparency | Emotion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quant Fund | Algorithm | Moderate | Partial | None |
| Active Fund | Fund Manager | Higher | Moderate | Possible |
| Index Fund | Rules (SEBI list) | Lowest | Full | None |
Taxation
| Holding Period | Tax Rate |
|---|---|
| Less than 12 months | 20% STCG (raised from 15%, July 23, 2024) |
| More than 12 months | 12.5% LTCG above ₹1.25L gains |
| Dividend / IDCW | Slab rate; TDS above ₹10,000/FY |
Tax treatment applies to equity-oriented quant funds (≥65% equity). Check specific fund's category for debt-oriented quant funds.
Bottom Line
Quantitative investing is a legitimate and growing investment approach globally and increasingly in India. Done well, quant models can remove emotional biases, systematically exploit proven factors, and generate consistent alpha. Done poorly, they can underperform index funds significantly.
Before investing in a quant fund, understand: (1) what factors the model uses, (2) how often it rebalances, (3) its live track record (not just back-tested data), and (4) any current regulatory matters involving the AMC. As always, verify with your advisor.
